On Saturday, we hosted our GreenGroup annual soccer day.
Loads of fun was had by the 60 staff members who participated. Well done to Team 3 (staff from Linbro, Worldnet, workshop and Gascor), whose incredible soccer skills lead them to victory on the day and to Team 8 (staff from Brooklands and Umthunzi) for coming in second place!

We can't wait to see what skills and fun the 2024 soccer tournament will bring!

Here are 3 top tips on maintaining your hedges

1. Keep it thick and dense - Small birds such as thrushes, finches, robins, hedge sparrows, and wrens find safe nesting and roosting spots in your hedge. Magpies, crows, pigeons, and squirrels are drawn to open hedges. Holly is an excellent hedge plant, creating compact, dense bushes that provide great winter protection.
2. Don’t cut too often or too tight - Although it is vital to prune a hedge to keep it thick, if it is cut back to the same point every year, it will yield few flowers or berries. So, attempt to prune the hedge only once every two or three years, or let it grow out and up a little each time. Another option is to only clip one side or the top each year. If you must trim your hedge periodically, try to leave some berry or fruit bearing trees to mature - one full hawthorn can produce as many berries as 200 meters of hedge cut every year.
3. Encourage flowers and grasses at the base and margins- Hedges with a lot of greenery at the base provide habitat for a lot of creatures. Flowers such as primroses and knapweed supply nectar and pollen for bees and other useful invertebrates, while tussocky grasses provide winter shelter for beetles, spiders, and the like. For food, cover, and places to hibernate; frogs, toads, newts, and lizards prefer dense growth near the base of hedgerows. The hedgehog enjoys dense cover as well!

Lawn dressing is especially good for lawns with poor soil conditions, uneven surfaces, or compaction or drainage concerns. It can help revive and revitalise the grass, resulting in thicker, healthier, and more aesthetically pleasing turf.

The following is a typical lawn dressing procedure:

* Lawn Inspection: Before applying topdressing, evaluate the grass for any problem areas, such as compacted soil, uneven patches, or poor drainage.
* Soil preparation: To ensure even distribution of the dressing, the lawn should be mowed to a low height.
* Application: Using a shovel, rake, or specialised topdressing equipment, spread the lawn dressing mixture uniformly across the grass. The dressing layer is typically 14 to 12 inches thick.
* Leveling: The dressing is leveled after application to ensure even distribution and to fill in any low spots or uneven sections.
* Watering: Water the lawn thoroughly after topdressing to help the dressing settle into the existing turf and soil.
* Post care:Water the lawn on a regular basis to keep the dressing and the grass healthy. It is also recommended that excessive foot activity be avoided on the lawn for a few weeks to allow the grass to establish itself.
